DM Cardiology
Direct answer
DM Cardiology is a three-year doctoral super-speciality in diseases of the heart and circulation, entered after a qualifying postgraduate degree. The usual feeder is MD General Medicine, though many institutes also accept MD Paediatrics graduates. Most seats are filled through NEET-SS, conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), with counselling by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC); the AIIMS-group institutes take their own route through INI-SS. Across three years the resident progresses from ward-based cardiac medicine to catheterisation laboratory experience and consultant-level decision-making.
Course structure and curriculum
- Coronary artery disease: stable ischaemia, acute coronary syndromes, reperfusion and secondary prevention.
- Echocardiography (transthoracic and transoesophageal), stress testing, cardiac CT and MRI.
- Interventional training in coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, as permitted by the centre.
- Heart failure, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
- Arrhythmias: ECG and Holter interpretation, electrophysiology basics, device follow-up.
- Valvular heart disease, infective endocarditis and rheumatic heart disease control programmes.
- Adult congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension and pericardial disorders.
- Hypertension, dyslipidaemia and preventive cardiology, including rehabilitation.
- Cardiac emergencies: cardiogenic shock, tamponade and advanced resuscitation.
- Thesis work, journal clubs and evidence-based appraisal of landmark trials.
Entrance examinations
NEET-SS is a computer-based paper of 150 multiple-choice questions to be finished in two-and-a-half hours; each correct response earns four marks and each wrong one costs one, so disciplined question selection beats wild guessing. NBEMS clusters DM, MCh and DrNB programmes into counselling groups linked to the qualifying MD or DNB, and cardiology aspirants compete within the medicine-based cluster before MCC allots seats by rank and preference. INI-SS, run by AIIMS New Delhi for the Institutes of National Importance, shortlists through a computer-based Stage 1 theory test followed by a departmental assessment (Stage 2) at the admitting institute. For this super-speciality the exams reward rapid ECG and imaging interpretation, guideline fluency and command of practice-changing trial evidence.
Examinations during and after the course
Annual internal assessments, seminar presentations and procedure logs run through the residency. The exit examination, set by the university or NBEMS, consists of written theory papers, clinical and practical examinations with long and short cases, and vivas probing investigation choices, devices and emergency management. A thesis on an approved cardiology topic must be submitted and defended before the final examination. Trainees who maintain systematic notes and procedural records from the first year carry far less pressure into the final stretch.
Career pathways after DM Cardiology
Graduates commonly join corporate hospitals or medical colleges as consultant cardiologists, with interventional volume shaping early practice. Academic posts, further fellowships in electrophysiology, structural heart disease or heart failure and transplant, and growing niches such as preventive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation round out the options.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the DM Cardiology course?
Three years of full-time residency after the qualifying MD or DNB degree.
Which MD degrees lead to DM Cardiology?
MD General Medicine is the standard feeder; MD Paediatrics is accepted at several institutes, and DNB General Medicine holders are also eligible through NEET-SS.
Which entrance exam is required for DM Cardiology?
NEET-SS for the majority of seats, and INI-SS for AIIMS and other Institutes of National Importance.
What is the scope after DM Cardiology?
Consultant interventional or non-invasive cardiologist roles, teaching positions and fellowships in electrophysiology, structural heart or transplant cardiology.
How does the NEET-SS group system affect cardiology aspirants?
Courses are grouped by feeder qualification for counselling, so one NEET-SS score can open several medicine-based DM options; confirm the current structure in the NBEMS bulletin.
