NEET-SS
Direct answer
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Superspeciality), or NEET-SS, is India's entrance examination for admission to DM, MCh and DrNB superspeciality courses, conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). Preparing for it means deepening your knowledge of your own broad speciality — medicine, surgery, paediatrics and others — to the level expected of a superspeciality trainee, through focused reading, previous-year questions, mock tests and revision. This guide explains the exam's pattern, syllabus and a practical way to prepare.
About the exam
NEET-SS is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) as a computer-based test, held once a year in recent cycles. It is the single eligibility-cum-ranking examination for admission to DM and MCh courses in medical colleges and institutions across India, and to DrNB (DNB superspeciality) courses. Doctors who have completed or are completing MD, MS or DNB in the relevant broad speciality take the examination. The examination date, application window and information bulletin are announced by NBEMS, and the list of superspeciality courses offered, with their qualifying broad specialities, is published with each notification.
Exam pattern and marking
- Mode: computer-based test.
- Questions: 150 multiple-choice questions on the superspeciality and closely related fields of the course applied for.
- Sections: the paper is divided into three time-locked sections of 50 questions each, with 50 minutes allotted per section; candidates cannot return to a section once its time has ended.
- Marks: four marks for each correct answer, a total of 600; one mark is deducted for each incorrect answer; unattempted questions carry no penalty.
- Duration: two hours and thirty minutes in total.
- Qualifying: the category-wise qualifying percentile is announced by NBEMS with results.
Syllabus overview
The NEET-SS syllabus is the curriculum of the superspeciality course applied for, assessed at a level that presumes sound grounding in the parent broad speciality. For a candidate seeking a DM course in cardiology, the syllabus extends across cardiovascular physiology and pathology, clinical cardiology, electrocardiography and imaging, interventional procedures and cardiac pharmacology in depth. For a candidate seeking a DM course in neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, medical oncology or another medical superspeciality, the corresponding organ-system basic sciences, diagnostics, therapeutics and recent advances form the core. For MCh courses in neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery and allied fields, operative anatomy, surgical techniques, perioperative care and organ-specific pathology dominate. NBEMS publishes course-wise question distributions in the bulletin. Questions are clinical and applied — case scenarios, investigations, images and management decisions — and candidates are expected to keep abreast of current guidelines and recent developments in their chosen field, since reading beyond standard textbooks is repeatedly rewarded by previous papers.
How to prepare
- Strengthen the parent speciality first. Revise your MD, MS or DNB subject thoroughly, because superspeciality questions build on its core — physiology, pathology, diagnostics and management.
- Read the superspeciality standard texts. Work through the recognised reference book for your chosen course, complemented by journals and current guidelines for recent-advance questions.
- Practise previous-year papers and question banks. Solve NEET-SS papers of past years for your course to understand the depth and spread of questions, and study image-based material relevant to the speciality.
- Rehearse section-timed mocks and revise. Take full-length 150-question mocks under the three time-locked sections to calibrate pace and risk under negative marking, and compress your reading into revision notes for the final weeks.

After the exam
Candidates receive percentile scores and ranks, on the basis of which the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts centralised counselling for DM, MCh and DrNB seats at government institutions, with separate processes for private colleges and universities. Qualifying NEET-SS leads to admission to a three-year DM or MCh course or a DrNB course — the pathway to becoming a superspecialist in fields such as cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery or surgical oncology.

Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for NEET-SS?
Candidates must hold an MD, MS or DNB degree in the broad speciality prescribed as the qualifying qualification for the superspeciality course applied for. The course-wise mapping of qualifying degrees is published by NBEMS in the information bulletin.
Is there a limit on the number of attempts?
No fixed attempt limit is prescribed under the current rules; candidates may appear in successive years while they continue to meet the eligibility conditions.
What is the marking scheme?
Each correct answer earns four marks and each incorrect answer costs one mark. Unattempted questions carry no penalty, so selective, reasoned attempting is wiser than blanket guessing.
What are the time-locked sections?
The 150 questions are delivered in three sections of 50 questions each, with 50 minutes per section. Once a section closes, its questions can no longer be attempted.
Which courses does NEET-SS cover?
It covers DM and MCh superspeciality courses in medical colleges and institutions across India as well as DrNB courses — the DNB stream's superspeciality qualifications — across a wide range of medical and surgical fields.
Is NEET-SS difficult?
The paper probes superspeciality-level depth in your chosen field, so it rewards specialists who read deeply and stay current with guidelines rather than broad revision. Focused, question-led preparation over several months is the standard approach.
When is NEET-SS 2027 held and how do I apply?
The date, application window and bulletin are announced by NBEMS on its official websites. Applications are submitted online, and the choice of superspeciality courses is exercised during this process.
How does counselling work after qualifying?
Ranks are used by the MCC for centralised allotment of DM, MCh and DrNB seats at government institutions, with further rounds and separate processes for private institutions, according to rank, category and preferences.
Does PrepElephant cover NEET-SS?
