DrNB Urology
Direct answer
DrNB Urology is the three-year NBEMS super-speciality residency in surgical diseases of the kidneys, urinary tract, adrenal glands and male reproductive system. Entry follows MS or DNB in General Surgery through NEET-SS, with the course-wise qualifying degrees published in the NBEMS bulletin. The DrNB is recognised as equivalent to MCh Urology, and — the defining trait of National Board qualifications — the final theory and practical examinations are set and held by NBEMS rather than a university.
Course structure and curriculum
- Endourology in earnest: cystoscopy, ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy for complex stone disease, which is abundant in India.
- Transurethral resection of the prostate and other bladder-outlet procedures for prostatic enlargement.
- Laparoscopic training from radical and simple nephrectomy to pyeloplasty, partial nephrectomy and ureteric reimplantation.
- Uro-oncology operating: radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy with urinary diversion and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection.
- Renal transplantation rotations covering donor nephrectomy, recipient surgery, immunosuppression protocols and post-transplant care.
- Andrology and men's health — infertility evaluation, varicocele repair, erectile dysfunction management, penile and urethral reconstruction.
- Female urology and neurourology with urodynamic study interpretation.
- Paediatric urology problems such as hypospadias, pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction and undescended testis.
- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and outpatient stone-clinic work.
- Uro-radiology reading of CT urography, retrograde studies and nuclear scans.
- Emergency urology, stricture disease and a compulsory research dissertation.
Entrance examinations
NEET-SS is the gateway: 150 multiple-choice questions taken on computer in three time-locked sections of 50 questions, four marks awarded per correct answer and one deducted per wrong one. Urology questions ride on a solid general-surgery platform — renal physiology, fluid balance, sepsis and surgical anatomy — before testing stone disease, urological cancers, infertility and recent endourological advances. INI-SS is the parallel test for MCh urology seats at AIIMS and similar institutes and does not fill DrNB seats.
Examinations
The concluding examination has written theory papers and a practical-clinical plus viva component, both arranged by NBEMS, with dissertation acceptance as the entry ticket. Practicals favour candidates who can discuss an operative plan stepwise, read a urogram or CT confidently, and identify instruments; vivas commonly circle malignancy staging, stone metaphylaxis and transplant immunology. Theory rewards organised answers — classifications first, then investigation algorithms, then management — and previous-year papers reveal the recurring themes worth a second and third revision.
Career pathways
DrNB urologists are recruited by corporate hospitals, medical colleges and dedicated kidney and cancer institutes, and many enter independent practice. Fellowships in robotic surgery, endourology, uro-oncology or transplant urology are popular next steps, and options abroad exist. India's renal stone belts and rising urological cancer burden keep the workload heavy.

Frequently asked questions
What is DrNB Urology?
It is NBEMS's three-year super-speciality surgical residency in genitourinary surgery, open after MS or DNB General Surgery through NEET-SS and recognised as MCh-equivalent.
Which exam do I clear, and what is its pattern?
NEET-SS, a computer-based NBEMS examination of 150 questions in three time-locked sections, with four marks per correct answer and a one-mark negative marking per wrong answer.
What operative exposure does training give?
Trainees log endourological stone procedures, TURP, laparoscopic renal surgery, uro-oncological resections and, in transplant centres, donor and recipient kidney surgery.
How tough is the final examination?
It is a genuine test of clinical and operative judgement through NBEMS theory papers, practical cases and viva; consistent reading, previous-year practice and rehearsed case discussion are the reliable preparation.
What are the options after passing?
Hospital consultant posts, private urology practice, senior residency, and fellowships in robotics, uro-oncology or transplant surgery are the well-trodden directions.
