JEE Advanced

Direct answer

JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for admission to the undergraduate programmes of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), organised every year by one of the IITs on rotation — most recently IIT Roorkee for the 2026 examination. Only candidates who rank among the top performers in JEE Main may appear, so preparation naturally builds on a strong JEE Main foundation and extends it towards deeper, multi-concept problem solving.

About the exam

JEE Advanced is conducted in computer-based mode by the organising IIT, with the organising institute rotating each year. It is the sole route to B.Tech, B.S. and integrated postgraduate programmes at the IITs, and some other institutes such as IISc and IISERs also use JEE Advanced ranks for admission. Candidates who have just completed Class 12, or passed it in the previous year, form the typical cohort. The organising IIT announces the examination date, registration window and detailed information brochure each year on jeeadv.ac.in.

Exam pattern and marking

  • Papers: two papers of three hours each, held on the same day; appearing in both papers is compulsory.
  • Mode: computer-based, with question types that may include multiple-choice questions with one or more correct options, numerical-value questions and matching-type questions.
  • Marking: the marking scheme varies by paper and section, and partial marks may be awarded for partially correct answers in multiple-option questions; negative marking applies to some sections. The exact scheme is published with each year's brochure.
  • Syllabus: the organising IIT publishes a detailed syllabus document covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Eligibility: candidates must rank within the top 2,50,000 (including all categories) in the B.E./B.Tech paper of JEE Main of the corresponding year, and satisfy the Class 12 and attempt-limit criteria.
  • Attempt limit: a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years; candidates must have appeared in Class 12 for the first time either in the current year or the preceding year.

Syllabus overview

The JEE Advanced syllabus is close to, but not identical with, the Class 11 and 12 curriculum, and the official syllabus document on jeeadv.ac.in is the definitive list. In Mathematics, it covers complex numbers and quadratic equations, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, the binomial theorem, matrices and determinants, probability, trigonometry, two- and three-dimensional geometry, differential and integral calculus, differential equations and vectors. Physics spans mechanics, rotational dynamics, gravitation, waves and thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic induction, optics and modern physics. Chemistry is split into physical chemistry (atomic structure, chemical bonding, energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and chemical kinetics), inorganic chemistry (periodic trends, compounds of representative and transition elements, coordination compounds and ores) and organic chemistry (stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides and polymers). Questions routinely combine two or more concepts in a single problem, which distinguishes the paper from school-level testing.

How to prepare

  1. Consolidate JEE Main-level mastery. Ensure every chapter of the Class 11–12 syllabus is conceptually secure, because JEE Advanced questions assume fluency and add layers of reasoning.
  2. Practise advanced problems. Move to question banks and previous-year JEE Advanced papers, focusing on multi-concept problems, assertion-type reasoning and numerical work done by hand.
  3. Train in the exam's own format. Attempt past papers of both Paper 1 and Paper 2 under strict three-hour conditions, and study the marking scheme each year so that partial-mark questions are attempted sensibly.
  4. Revise analytically. Maintain topic-wise error logs and revisit weak areas in planned cycles, keeping the final fortnight for revision, formula recall and full-length simulation rather than new topics.

Preparation with PrepElephant

PrepElephant supports JEE Advanced preparation with previous-year question practice, question banks, mock tests and revision tools in the PrepElephant app, along with free guides and resources on this website. The examination is conducted by the organising IIT, and eligibility, registration and exam-day information should always be confirmed on the official website.

After the exam

Results are declared as category-wise All India Ranks, and seat allocation for the IITs takes place through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process, in which candidates fill programme and institute preferences in several rounds. Qualifying leads to admission to four-year B.Tech and B.S. programmes, five-year integrated or dual-degree programmes, and architecture programmes at the IITs.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible to appear for JEE Advanced?

Candidates must rank within the top 2,50,000 candidates, including all categories, in the B.E./B.Tech paper of the corresponding year's JEE Main, and must satisfy the Class 12 and attempt-limit conditions stated in the official brochure.

How many attempts are allowed?

A candidate may attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and in two consecutive years under the current rules.

What marks do I need in Class 12?

For admission to the IITs, candidates must have passed Class 12 with at least 75 per cent aggregate, or be within the top 20 percentile of their board, with relaxations for reserved categories.

How is JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?

JEE Advanced probes deeper conceptual understanding, frequently combines multiple concepts in one question, and uses a variable marking scheme with partial marks. JEE Main is broader and more speed-oriented, and serves as the qualifying stage.

Is JEE Advanced difficult?

The paper is regarded as demanding because of its reasoning depth rather than its syllabus size, so preparation over an extended period with ample practice of past papers is the established approach.

What is the exam pattern?

Two compulsory papers of three hours each, held on the same day in computer-based mode. The number of questions, sections and marking details change from year to year and are announced only through the official brochure.

When is JEE Advanced 2027 held and how do I register?

The date and registration window are announced by the organising IIT on jeeadv.ac.in, usually a few weeks after the JEE Main results, and registration must be completed online within the announced window.

What happens after qualifying?

Candidates receive All India Ranks and participate in JoSAA counselling for seat allocation across the IITs. Institutes such as IISc and the IISERs also admit students on JEE Advanced ranks through their own processes.

Does PrepElephant cover JEE Advanced?

Yes. PrepElephant offers previous-year question practice, question banks, mock tests and revision tools for JEE Advanced in the app, along with free guides and resources on this website.
