DrNB Surgical Gastroenterology

Direct answer

DrNB Surgical Gastroenterology is the three-year National Board residency in operative diseases of the digestive tract, liver, pancreas and biliary system. Doctors enter after MS or DNB in General Surgery by qualifying in NEET-SS, and the DrNB is recognised as standing equal to MCh Surgical Gastroenterology. As with every National Board super-speciality, the closing theory and practical examinations are designed and conducted by NBEMS, not by an affiliating university.

Course structure and curriculum

  • Upper gastrointestinal surgery: gastrectomy for cancer, oesophagectomy and surgery for benign strictures and achalasia.
  • Hepatobiliary operating, from cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration to major liver resections and surgery for portal hypertension.
  • Pancreatic surgery, including pancreaticoduodenectomy and necrosectomy for infected pancreatic necrosis.
  • Colorectal surgery — segmental colectomies, total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and rectal cancer excision with sphincter considerations.
  • Advanced laparoscopy as the default approach for much of the workload, with exposure to robotic platforms in some centres.
  • Gastrointestinal endoscopy training: diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy, and ERCP exposure.
  • Emergency gastrointestinal surgery for perforations, obstruction and haemorrhage, an ever-present share of unit life.
  • Multidisciplinary tumour-board participation with medical and radiation oncologists for GI cancers.
  • Nutrition support, stoma care and complex abdominal wall reconstruction.
  • Liver transplant exposure in units that run transplantation programmes.
  • Dissertation research and a comprehensive operative logbook maintained through the residency.

Entrance examinations

The seat comes via NEET-SS, NBEMS's 150-question computer-based examination divided into three time-locked sections of 50 questions, each correct answer earning four marks and each error costing one. Questions presuppose firm general-surgery ground before probing GI oncology staging, portal hypertension, pancreatitis management and surgical anatomy of the liver and biliary tree. INI-SS is a different ladder — it leads to institute MCh seats and does not govern DrNB admissions.

Examinations

Theory papers first, then practical-clinical and viva, both administered by NBEMS, with the dissertation accepted as a precondition. Imaging-heavy interpretation — CT liver phases, MRCP, fistulograms — plus instrument identification and operative-step narration fill the practical; answer-writing for theory should open with a definition or classification and close with a management algorithm. Repeated solving of previous-year papers and honest self-testing through mock papers is the least glamorous and most reliable way to finish ready.

Career pathways

Surgical gastroenterologists join dedicated GI surgery units, cancer centres and transplant programmes, or build referral practices around hepato-pancreato-biliary and colorectal work. Fellowships in liver transplantation, HPB surgery, colorectal surgery or minimal access surgery are natural extensions, and options abroad exist. GI cancer volumes in India make the speciality steadily busy.

Frequently asked questions

What is DrNB Surgical Gastroenterology?

It is NBEMS's three-year super-speciality residency in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, pursued after MS or DNB General Surgery through NEET-SS.

How does it compare with MCh?

The two are equivalent qualifications; the DrNB is examined nationally by NBEMS, whereas the MCh is a university degree examined by the concerned institution.

What operations does a trainee learn?

Trainees progress through laparoscopic and open GI resections, liver and pancreatic procedures, colorectal surgery and emergency GI work, logging each step of graded responsibility.

What is the final examination like?

NBEMS theory papers plus practicals with case discussion, imaging, instruments and viva; accepted dissertation work is mandatory before a trainee can appear.

What careers follow?

GI surgical units, cancer hospitals and transplant centres recruit graduates; fellowships in HPB, colorectal or transplant surgery and academic posts round out the choices.
