Final BDS (Fourth Year)
Direct answer
Final BDS — the fourth year — is the full clinical year of the dental degree, in which every speciality of dentistry is studied and practised on patients. The DCI curriculum brings Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Orthodontics, Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology, and Public Health Dentistry together in one demanding professional examination. Clearing it leads to the compulsory rotating internship and registered dental practice.
Course structure and curriculum
- Oral Medicine and Radiology: diagnosis of oral lesions and radiographic interpretation — intraoral periapical, occlusal, panoramic and extraoral views.
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: exodontia and minor oral surgery, local anaesthesia, infections, trauma and cysts, with theatre observation for major procedures.
- Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge: complete and removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures and basic implant awareness.
- Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics: restorations, root canal treatment and pulpally compromised teeth.
- Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics: growth, malocclusion classification, diagnosis and appliance basics.
- Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry: child behaviour management, restorative and preventive care.
- Periodontology: periodontal diagnosis, scaling and root planing, surgical observation.
- Public Health Dentistry: oral disease epidemiology, prevention programmes and camp postings.
- Clinical postings with patient-work quotas and case records in each department.
- Compulsory rotating internship after the examination.
Admission and where this year fits
This is the culmination of the course entered through NEET-UG: first year built the sciences, second the disease concepts and hand skills, third the medical judgement, and final year assembles all of it chairside. Patient quotas make attendance non-negotiable, since eligibility and clinical skill both depend on completed cases. Some universities distribute speciality teaching across third and final year differently, so your university's regulations have the final word.
Examinations
The final professional examination is the degree's largest — theory papers in every speciality, clinical practicals with viva, and scrutiny of case records and quotas. Clinical practicals put a patient, radiograph or prepared tooth before you, so daily clinic work is itself the preparation. For theory, organise each speciality into diagnosis, investigations, treatment planning and maintenance, and drill your university's previous-year papers, since final-year questions repeat themes heavily. Begin revision early rather than after quotas end.
What comes next
Passing final BDS begins the rotating internship, after which you register with your State Dental Council and can practise. The next academic decision is NEET-MDS — its syllabus draws from exactly this year's subjects — while alternatives include government service, armed forces dentistry, hospital posts, private practice or going abroad, each with its own licensing requirements.
Preparation with PrepElephant
The PrepElephant app supports final BDS students with speciality-wise question banks, previous-year-style practice, mock tests and revision tools, and doubles as NEET-MDS foundation practice; free guides are on this website. Clinical hours, quotas and standard textbooks remain the core of final year.

Frequently asked questions
Which subjects are examined in final BDS?
Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Orthodontics, Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Public Health Dentistry.
What are patient quotas?
Minimum numbers of clinical procedures — extractions, restorations, dentures, root canals and the like — that must be completed and recorded in each department to qualify for the examination.
How should theory for so many subjects be planned?
Study specialities in parallel using diagnosis-treatment frameworks, keep condensed notes per subject, and rehearse with previous-year papers from mid-year onwards.
What happens after the final examination?
You enter the compulsory rotating internship, then register with the State Dental Council — after which practice, government posts or NEET-MDS preparation follow.
Does final BDS overlap with NEET-MDS?
Greatly — NEET-MDS tests the clinical dental specialities, so disciplined final-year study builds much of the postgraduate entrance foundation automatically.
