Direct answer

Four mechanical properties decide what an archwire can do: strength (the force it withstands before permanent deformation), stiffness (force per unit of deflection — the load-deflection rate), springback (how far it recovers elastically when deactivated), and formability (how far it can be bent into configurations without fracturing), with biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, weldability and low friction completing the ideal-wire profile. Stainless steel offers high stiffness, superb formability and low friction but heavy forces in larger dimensions; nickel-titanium alloys deliver light continuous force with vast springback but almost no formability — the alignment wire of the modern era; beta-titanium (TMA) occupies the middle ground with weldability and good formability at roughly 40 percent of steel stiffness; cobalt-chromium wires (Elgiloy) can be heat-treated after forming to gain strength. Clinically the sequence follows the metallurgy: NiTi to align, steel to work and finish, TMA where controlled lower stiffness and bends are needed together.

What you must remember

  • Stiffness scales as the fourth power of the diameter: doubling a round wire's diameter makes it sixteen times stiffer; halving the wire's span length between brackets stiffens it eight-fold (stiffness varies inversely with the cube of length) — the two quotable wire laws.
  • Resilience versus springback: resilience is stored energy under the elastic limit (area under the stress-strain curve to yield), springback the elastic recovery on unloading; NiTi leads both, steel trails.
  • Stainless steel (18-8 austenitic; the molybdenum-bearing 316 variant resists corrosion): the all-round working wire — high stiffness, excellent formability for bends and loops, solderable and weldable, low friction; heavy force is its weakness in large dimensions.
  • Nickel-titanium: superelasticity (the flat force plateau of austenitic active NiTi across a wide deflection range) and shape memory (temperature-dependent martensite-austenite transformation) give light, continuous, long-range force; the trade-offs are poor formability, high friction and cost.
  • Beta-titanium (TMA — titanium-molybdenum alloy): roughly 40 percent the stiffness of steel, excellent formability, the only major wire that welds — ideal for finishing bends, gable bends and segmented mechanics.
  • Elgiloy (cobalt-chromium): supplied in four tempers (blue most used), formable when soft and strengthened by heat treatment after bending; the classical clasp and spring wire of the pre-NiTi decades.
  • Australian wire (Wilcock): high-tensile steel with high springback for its stiffness class — the Begg technique's round 0.016 wire with anchor bends depends on it.
  • Clinical mapping: NiTi for initial alignment and severely displaced teeth; steel round wires for early levelling and sliding space closure; steel rectangular (0.019 x 0.025 in a 0.022 slot) as the working wire; multistranded steel where light force and stiffness control are wanted cheaply.

Selecting the wire for three clinical moments

At bond-up, a lower arch with a 4 mm displaced canine needs range with light force: a 0.014 NiTi engages every bracket, rides the displacement with its plateau force, and recovers fully — trying the same with 0.016 steel courts hyalinisation and permanent set. Months later, canine retraction on a 0.019 x 0.025 steel archwire in a 0.022 slot wants stiffness: the wire resists the deflection of elastic chain, keeps the slot-play torque under control and slides cleanly. In finishing, a first premolar extraction case with a rotated molar and a needed gable bend calls for TMA: formable enough for precise second-order bends, weldable where a hook must be added, and at 40 percent of steel stiffness it delivers gentler moments through the last millimetres. Each material earns its slot in the sequence because of one property dominating the clinical moment — springback first, stiffness second, formability last.

How the viva examines wires

The viva opens with the ideal properties of an orthodontic wire (list them: strength, stiffness or springiness, springback, resilience, formability, biocompatibility, stability in the oral environment, weldability, low friction) and then jumps to the d⁴ law — expect the arithmetic: doubling diameter, sixteen times the stiffness. Indian practical teaching still expects wire sizes in inches — 0.018 and 0.022 slots with the standard round and rectangular dimensions — so numbers and metallurgy are examined together.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to wire stiffness when the diameter doubles?

Stiffness rises with the fourth power of diameter, so doubling the diameter makes the wire sixteen times stiffer and the delivered force correspondingly heavier.

Why is NiTi preferred for initial alignment?

Its superelasticity provides a light, continuous force plateau over a wide deflection range with outstanding springback, letting one wire engage severely displaced teeth without permanent deformation.

What advantages does beta-titanium (TMA) offer?

About 40 percent of steel's stiffness, excellent formability for finishing bends, and weldability — the only major archwire alloy that can be welded.

What is Elgiloy and how is it strengthened?

A cobalt-chromium-nickel alloy supplied in tempers (blue being common), shaped while soft and then heat-treated to increase strength and springiness.

Which wire properties suit the working phase of treatment?

High stiffness for sliding mechanics and torque control with good formability and low friction — met by rectangular stainless steel, classically 0.019 x 0.025 inch in a 0.022-inch slot.
